Passport fraud rampant in Hyderabad

Hyderabad, Feb. 25: Cases of passport malpractice are on rise at the Begumpet airport. Immigration department’s special branch of the City Police is under heavy pressure as the arrival and departure of passengers at the Hyderabad airport has reached 8.75 lakh in 2005. The number was 6.65 lakh in 2004 and 5,24,241 in 2003. There 7,681 international flights operating at Hyderabad in 2005 while the figure for 2004 and 2003 stood at 6,683 and 5,363.

As per the statistics of the special branch in 2005, 165 cases of passport violations have been registered as against 62 in 2004. In 2003, 63 cases were booked. A senior City Police official said, “Though the Immigration department is supposed to be taken over by the Intelligence Bureau, no effort has been made in this regard. In New Delhi, Intelligence Bureau is handling the immigration department.”

As per the records of Beg-umpet police, at least 15 cases of fake passport and immigration check not req-uired certificate cases were registered in 2006 so far.

“In these couple of months there are two cases of people from outside the State caught at Begumpet airport while trying to fly with fake passports. However, the UK visa fraud cases has decreased,” said the police official.

City police commissioner A.K Mohanty said, “More cases indicate higher alert at the airport. Action will be taken against negligent staff. The immigration department is under pressure due to staff crunch but we will not compromise on our duty. The number of passengers and flights have increased. There should be a permanent plan to strengthen the department,” Higher officials cracked the whip against corrupt officials of immigration department and suspended them for negligence.
