Lucknow tense, CM orders inquiry

Lucknow, March 4: Lucknow remained tense and observed a near total bandh on Saturday to protest against Friday’s communal violence even as sporadic incidents continued to occur in the violence-hit areas. The Mulayam Singh government has set up a high-level two-member committee, comprising Mr Navin Chandra Bajpai, agricultural production commissioner and Mr Bua Singh, DG PAC, to probe the reasons that led to communal clashes.

A high alert has also been sounded in the state to prevent violence from spreading. “The committee has been asked to submit its report within two days and will also inquire whether there were any administrative lapses in controlling the clashes. It has further been asked to suggest ways to control such situations in future,” principal home secretary Alok Sinha said.

He said that the committee would also assess whether there was an intelligence failure on the issue. The State has also announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakhs each for the kin of the victims and Rs 50,000 for those who have been seriously injured in the clashes.
