Washed-up Hollywood film director Carl Denham (Jack Black) comes into possession of a secret map to an uncharted island (how he got such a map is unexplained, but in a film about giant monkeys, suspension of disbelief is not only encouraged but downright required). With the plug pulled on his latest studio picture, Carl and his assistant (Colin Hanks) flee with a small camera crew to charter a ship before the studio can have him arrested.
With his star actress out of the running (and Faye Wray unavailable due to filming an RKO classic), Carl discovers young Ann Darrow (Naomi Watts), a poverty-stricken actress looking for her big break. Carl woos Ann with promises of high-profile fame and the chance for her to meet admired playwright Jack Driscoll (Adrien Brody). Once arriving on the mysterious Skull Island, Ann is kidnapped by local natives and offered as a sacrifice to their island god, a giant gorilla called KONG! What follows is a desperate chase to reclaim Ann from the lonely but fearsome beast, his eventual capture and journey to New York, and... well, you can probably take it from here.
Because the film is celebrating a Hollywood classic and assumes you have as much reverence for the original material as the filmmakers do, the acting can sometimes come off as melodramatic. From Carl's powder-keg enthusiasm to Jack and Ann's cinema-quick romance, it seems at times (especially in the first quarter of the film) that we're winking at the camera a little bit. This is not to say the actors are not strong - the parts are well cast and there is a true sincerity beneath the performances, which makes you ultimately like these people.
There is also a strong attempt at character development - fleshing the characters out more strongly than in the original film, and adding interesting supporting characters such as the cigar-chomping seaman (Andy Serkis, in his non-Kong role).
But the true star is Kong himself, pantomimed with primal grace by Andy Serkis and given incredible (or more to the point, credible) life by the artists at Weta Digital. Kong is perhaps the subtlest of the performers in this film - for all his chest thumping he comes off remarkably pensive, lonely and capable of great emotion. Naomi Watts, her beauty contrasted in the ape's dark palm with her blonde locks and pursed red lips, is truly a treasure worth fighting a T-Rex for. And together, they make for a surprisingly real and touching on-screen pair.
They share a bonding laugh atop the cliffs of Skull Island as Ann attempts to entertain her captor, and (in a sequence unique to this remake) a dazzling last dance together on the frozen pond of Central Park. The bond is strong enough that by the time the film comes to its dark conclusion, we feel that something unspoken has passed between these two souls, and we truly do feel the simple tragedy of a beast undone by beauty.
The rest of the film is simply a roller-coaster ride that trumps any Jurassic amusement park. The journey is treacherous and filled with very real tensions. Jackson uses his CG brilliantly - it is an understatement to say that the man who gave us
The Lord of the Rings is a master of effects. And thanks to his ability to stage and edit scenes of great anticipation and suspense, he succeeds (for the most part) in creating a certain amount of wonder and genuine awe in the heart of a jaded and seasoned audience member. There are sparse exceptions - a brontosaurus stampede that is thrilling in concept but seems a bit unfinished in certain shots (at one point it looks as if Jack Black is simply running in place while CG dinosaurs leap around him) and a surprising over-use of strobe effects to disorient the audience.
But the majority of this film inspires wonder. It manages to celebrate the original film and even makes a few signature leaps in developing the Kong-Ann relationship beyond what was capable of the original animators. In the original film, Kong faced an audience of New York's elite by standing tall and rattling his chains. In Jackson's version, he sits on the stage, slumped over with his shackles hanging slack at his sides. You truly feel his shame, which makes his eventual rampage all the more satisfying. By the time he has climbed to the top of the Empire State and beats his chest victoriously, you truly know what he is feeling in that moment - an alpha male beefing himself up with enough intimidation for an entire city and its puny human inhabitants. But somehow, he knows as well as we do that the moment is fleeting.
And speaking of New York, it should be pointed out that here is where Weta Digital has really created something spectacular. It's one thing to create and populate a prehistoric island, something audiences have often seen and almost immediately accept. But most stunning of all is their gorgeous re-creation of 1940s Manhattan. From the Pepsodent ads that tower over Times Square to the shantytowns of the Upper West Side, it's a living postcard that makes you wonder if Weta hasn't spent most of their effects budget on a time machine.
